Summary

A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love in the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series。

Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries。 She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encyclopaedia of faerie lore。 But Emily Wilde is not good at people。 She could never make small talk at a party--or even get invited to one。 And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people。

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk。 Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily's research, and utterly confound and frustrate her。

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart。

This was a fun book and not exactly what I expected but still really good。 I will say the first 1/4 is super slow and it’s kind of hard to tell where the book is going it just wanders around until Wendell shows up and it gets interesting。 Essentially Emily studies faeries and is putting together a book。 She goes to a cold country to find info about a species of faeries no one has been able to see/meet。 While there, her colleague Wendell shows up and says he will help her。 Throughout their time t This was a fun book and not exactly what I expected but still really good。 I will say the first 1/4 is super slow and it’s kind of hard to tell where the book is going it just wanders around until Wendell shows up and it gets interesting。 Essentially Emily studies faeries and is putting together a book。 She goes to a cold country to find info about a species of faeries no one has been able to see/meet。 While there, her colleague Wendell shows up and says he will help her。 Throughout their time together we start to realize that they have feelings for each other and that not everything is as it seems。 Spoilers follow。 Wendell is a faerie which Emily figured out awhile ago。 He’s looking for a door back to his own realm because he’s meant to be King。 Emily gets into situations that he has to rescue her from。 Like she goes off and confronts the hidden ones to save two villagers。 She ends up nearly married to an old Fae king and chopping off her finger。 We get some Fae stories intermixed and the last one seems to somehow be connected to Emily and Wendell as in that they’re somehow fated to be together。 The writing is very detailed and it is a fun story。 。。。more

Every time I try and read either a cosy mystery or a cosy fantasy book I'm always wholeheartedly disappointed。 I hate to wipe on an entire genre from my reading list but I have to learn eventually that they just aren't for me。 The story is meh, the characters are meh。 All round it is just meh。I have rounded this up to three stars though as any less would be unfair as it is well written。 Every time I try and read either a cosy mystery or a cosy fantasy book I'm always wholeheartedly disappointed。 I hate to wipe on an entire genre from my reading list but I have to learn eventually that they just aren't for me。 The story is meh, the characters are meh。 All round it is just meh。I have rounded this up to three stars though as any less would be unfair as it is well written。 。。。more

4。5A winter cottagecore faerie romance with a light academia feel。 It’s a perfect read for mood readers and faerie lovers alike。 My favorite thing about this was the banter。 Gotta love the grumpy & sunshine dynamic。 The couple reminded me of Sophie & Howl from “Howl’s Moving Castle。” 🙌 The storyline was fantastical and full of whimsy but relatively low stakes。 There’s a couple of quests in here that have conveniently easy solutions, so if you’re looking for more dire circumstances in your fantas 4。5A winter cottagecore faerie romance with a light academia feel。 It’s a perfect read for mood readers and faerie lovers alike。 My favorite thing about this was the banter。 Gotta love the grumpy & sunshine dynamic。 The couple reminded me of Sophie & Howl from “Howl’s Moving Castle。” 🙌 The storyline was fantastical and full of whimsy but relatively low stakes。 There’s a couple of quests in here that have conveniently easy solutions, so if you’re looking for more dire circumstances in your fantasy reads, this ain’t it。 。。。more

What a wonderfully whimsical and cozy fantasy read! It is the perfect book to read in the unending winter (or, whenever I'm sure!)。 I'm writing this review a few days after finishing and I'm kicking myself for not consolidating my thinking more because I know this book wasn't just interesting to me as a story, but it hit me deeply personally too。 I connected with the journey Emily went on through this book as she discovered that she could rely on others and that people would show up and take car What a wonderfully whimsical and cozy fantasy read! It is the perfect book to read in the unending winter (or, whenever I'm sure!)。 I'm writing this review a few days after finishing and I'm kicking myself for not consolidating my thinking more because I know this book wasn't just interesting to me as a story, but it hit me deeply personally too。 I connected with the journey Emily went on through this book as she discovered that she could rely on others and that people would show up and take care of her。 This, for me, was where the real strength of the book lay, in its ability to connect with me deeply。Emily is a character who is very good at what she does but is not good at connecting with others。 She buries herself in her work of studying fae because that is where she excels。 She even seems to understand how to connect with these mythical creatures more than she is able to connect with people of her own species。 (As a note, I think Emily could be read as neurodivergent)。 I loved Emily as a character。 Even in this early 1900's setting, Emily is strong and precocious and independent。 This is necessary and important and yet it also creates barriers between her and others (see? hitting me right in the feels with that)。This book is wonderful。 The characters, plot, and setting are all strong。 The fae folk were written to perfection。 I felt the (view spoiler)[Faery King (hide spoiler)] section near the end of the book felt a little out of place but I'm not sure how Emily could have gone on the necessary character development she needed to go on without it。 All in all, this book was just so good。 。。。more

4。2 stars! It was a little too close to the cruel prince at times, but overall I really loved it。 I enjoyed the scientific journal style entries as the story, but know that isn’t for everyone!

3。5 ⭐️ This was fun when it’s introducing us to the different types of fairies and telling all the wild stories of their lore。 Where it lacked was the romance。 We are mostly getting the story from Emily’s journal entries, which is fine except she isn’t really interested in romance including her own。 She didn’t seem so much reluctant to talk about her love interest as disinterested。 ( also baby *spoiler* but our MMC is bringing multiple different ladies back to their cabin during their stay, if h 3。5 ⭐️ This was fun when it’s introducing us to the different types of fairies and telling all the wild stories of their lore。 Where it lacked was the romance。 We are mostly getting the story from Emily’s journal entries, which is fine except she isn’t really interested in romance including her own。 She didn’t seem so much reluctant to talk about her love interest as disinterested。 ( also baby *spoiler* but our MMC is bringing multiple different ladies back to their cabin during their stay, if he was really into our FMC I didn’t feel like he would have been hooking up with the locals。 Even if they tried to explain that with his flirty/extroverted personality) That would be totally fine if the romance wasn’t a main storyline。 If maybe we got more honest journal entries from other characters so we could feel the development from different povs。 I just wasn’t really invested。 I can’t believe I’m saying this but I wouldn’t have minded if the romance was just hinted at in this book seeing as it’s going to be a series, just set up the future romance。 The fairies and their nonsense really was the whole show。 。。。more

Found this recommended on both Smart Bitches Trashy Books as well as on booktok。 The recommendation said it was like an adult version of The Cruel Prince by Holly Black。 It did not disappoint。 Emily, the protagonist is so competent and intelligent it was awesome。 I feel like often if the female lead is smart then she has to also be rash or impetuous。 Emily is take charge but she gets herself into situations that she knows she can handle。 The best part is the Bambleby totally digs that about her。 Found this recommended on both Smart Bitches Trashy Books as well as on booktok。 The recommendation said it was like an adult version of The Cruel Prince by Holly Black。 It did not disappoint。 Emily, the protagonist is so competent and intelligent it was awesome。 I feel like often if the female lead is smart then she has to also be rash or impetuous。 Emily is take charge but she gets herself into situations that she knows she can handle。 The best part is the Bambleby totally digs that about her。 This is a super slow burn romance- which is really secondary to the main plot。 It sets up for book two nicely but wraps up the main conflict。 No cliffhanger。 Best book I’ve read all year so far。 。。。more

This story was adorable。 Emily's lack of interest in interpersonal skills causes some interesting mishaps for her。 She eventually learns the value of caring for others, which ends up being her salvation。 Her interactions with Wendell are funny and charming, and Wendell's amused reactions to her candor are fantastic。 I'm looking forward to the next in the series。 This story was adorable。 Emily's lack of interest in interpersonal skills causes some interesting mishaps for her。 She eventually learns the value of caring for others, which ends up being her salvation。 Her interactions with Wendell are funny and charming, and Wendell's amused reactions to her candor are fantastic。 I'm looking forward to the next in the series。 。。。more

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book。 I barely skimmed the synopsis since I knew I was going to read it anyway for a book club。 I did enjoy the beginning, a scholar fumbling in new lands to research faeries。 It had a bit of a cozy fantasy vibe。 The introduction of Emily’s colleague gave me some witty banter and the beginnings of a possible love story。 The adventurous ending with Emily’s very personal interactions with the Fae had me enraptured and I couldn’t put the book down。 I did I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book。 I barely skimmed the synopsis since I knew I was going to read it anyway for a book club。 I did enjoy the beginning, a scholar fumbling in new lands to research faeries。 It had a bit of a cozy fantasy vibe。 The introduction of Emily’s colleague gave me some witty banter and the beginnings of a possible love story。 The adventurous ending with Emily’s very personal interactions with the Fae had me enraptured and I couldn’t put the book down。 I did find the need to remind myself that it’s a series and not expect the story to fully wrap up by the end of the book。I very much enjoyed the story and will be continuing with the series。 。。。more

This was so unique: cozy fantasy, magical, and adventurous all at once。 I think it's quite perfect for people who grew up with Rainbow Magic (I did, and I really enjoyed this one!) I do understand why some reviews I've seen say that "nothing happens" but I think this is one of those "no plot mostly vibes" moments。 Perfect winter read, by the way。 This book serves as Emily Wilde's journal as she studies the folk in this wintry northern landscape, and I found it east to relate to her (would rather This was so unique: cozy fantasy, magical, and adventurous all at once。 I think it's quite perfect for people who grew up with Rainbow Magic (I did, and I really enjoyed this one!) Truly stepped out of my comfort zone reading this book。 I can honestly say I have never experienced a read like this。 I felt there wasn’t a lot of plot to the story and the whole story was too slow。 I didn’t really care for it。

This was a cute and cozy fantasy (though not as cozy as Legends and Lattes)。 I thoroughly enjoyed the relationship between Emily and Bramblebury, how their personalities tend to balance each other out。 I love how Emily is so focused on her studies, while Bramblebury is more interested in getting to know the people and charming their way into their hearts。 It was fun to see how Emily had a similar insight to the faerie folk, especialy with Poe and Shadow。 The way that Bramblebury's and Emily's pr This was a cute and cozy fantasy (though not as cozy as Legends and Lattes)。 I thoroughly enjoyed the relationship between Emily and Bramblebury, how their personalities tend to balance each other out。 I love how Emily is so focused on her studies, while Bramblebury is more interested in getting to know the people and charming their way into their hearts。 It was fun to see how Emily had a similar insight to the faerie folk, especialy with Poe and Shadow。 The way that Bramblebury's and Emily's prose and outlooks differed was fun, and one of my favorite pieces was how "Emily" included different fairy tales。 I thought it added a special element that made the story much more entertaining。 。。。more

I bought this book on a whim and had no idea what to expect — and it turns out it’s the perfect combination of academia and faerie lore that I never knew I needed! I fell in love with Emily Wilde, a dry-witted dryadologist, her giant canine companion Shadow, and her perplexing colleague Wendell, who has a few unexpected secrets。 The writing was somewhat droll (I laughed out loud a lot) and academic at times (the book served as documentation of Emily’s field notes) but was excellent。 I was consta I bought this book on a whim and had no idea what to expect — and it turns out it’s the perfect combination of academia and faerie lore that I never knew I needed!
